I came across this card while sifting through a big box of business cards I’ve been collecting over the years. I’ve had a number of my own cards over the years, but this particular card brings back some memories. I was a student in the Graphic Design program at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I was immersed in graphic design but still finding my way and figuring out what the profession was actually all about. In many ways I’m still in the same place but seeing it with slightly better vision.

I remember  getting the cards back from the printer—I think I only had about 100 printed—and feeling an excitement that just wouldn’t end. I felt official. Now I was a designer. I had my business card and everything! I was unstoppable. Forget the poor choice of type and horrendous kerning. It didn’t matter. I had designed something, had it printed, and held it in my hand. Back then I was relentless at making and rarely let perfection get in the way. I just wanted to design and pull the trigger. And I did.

Over the next few years I slowly began to make less and think more—a shift which ultimately carried me back to school to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, which I just completed. Now that I have re-entered the realm of being a professional design practitioner I am excited at the prospect of balancing the thinking with the making.
